Generative AI & Large Language Model Policy
The use of generative artificial intelligence and large language model (AI/LLM) technology has seen its fair share of controversy, including in the neurodivergent world. As AI/LLM becomes more and more prevalent, I want to take the opportunity to clarify my personal policies on the matter.
I do not personally use AI/LLM technology. Any communication you receive from me, any of my writing (including forms, waivers, and web copy), and any resources I create are not created with the assistance of any AI/LLM technology.
Some of the technologies I use in my work (including Practice Better, Zoom, and Canva) include AI/LLM features. Wherever possible, I have opted out of or turned off all such AI/LLM features. If I am not able to opt out of or turn off AI/LLM features, I do not intentionally use them.
I am not interested in promoting AI/LLM tools to my clients, nor will I be involved in their development. I often receive emails from developers and others who are interested in my perspective on their ADHD-related projects, or who hope I will promote their tools to my clients in exchange for affiliate codes. I very, very rarely participate in these opportunities, and that chance goes to 0% if your product or tool relies on AI/LLM technologies. (I anticipate that this clause will have vanishingly little effect on the number of cold emails I receive, but one must hope for the best.)
I do not judge clients who use AI/LLM technology, nor would I ever refuse to work with them on that basis alone. There is certainly an argument to be made for its use as an accessibility tool, among other possible applications. I also recognize that many people are now required or ‘highly encouraged’ to use AI/LLM technology as a condition of their employment. I will never ask or expect clients to justify their use of AI/LLM technology to me, or change/reduce their use of AI/LLM as a condition of working with me. If your use of AI/LLM is or becomes relevant to your coaching work, you have my assurance that, as with any other topic, I will facilitate your explorations in a compassionate and nonjudgmental manner.
If you are someone who uses AI/LLM technology, please bear the following in mind regarding our work together:
As I do not use AI/LLM technology myself, I am not especially familiar with its features and use cases for ADHD support. If you find this interferes with our work together, I am happy to refer you to coaches who are more AI/LLM-savvy.
I kindly ask that you do not provide any of my work, including resources created by me, my correspondence with you, my writing, my personal session notes accessible through Practice Better, or any voice or video recordings of our sessions, to any AI/LLM technology. This includes the use of AI note-taking assistants during sessions. Clients are always welcome to request access to my own notes from their sessions.
If you require access to alternate or additional formats for any of my work (e.g. summaries, dyslexia-friendly font/formatting, plain language/Simple English, visual aids, etc), and you would normally use AI/LLM technology to facilitate this, please ask me instead, and I will accommodate you to the best of my ability.
You are, of course, well within your rights to provide your personal notes from our sessions, or any resources I provide that were not created by me, to the AI/LLM technology of your choice.
If you have any questions about my generative artificial intelligence and large language model policy, please get in touch and I’ll be happy to clarify any uncertainties.
